2024 saw a record year for 2nd Edgware Scouts, where we’ve had 18 members achieve their Chief Scout’s Award. This includes four from the Scout section (ages 10.5–14) who have developed their peer-leadership skills, organised their own expedition and taken part in a range of creative and adventurous activities over their time at Scouts.
Our Group, which welcomes girls and boys aged 6–14, offers three age sections and runs weekly meetings at the Scout Hut, just a few minutes from Edgware Station. With a mixture of games and activities, our 2024 programme has included evenings on first aid, cooking and teamwork challenges in the style of a ‘Taskmaster’ competition. We’ve also spent a few weeks at other local venues, including the Welsh Harp for summer water sports, EHRS for the World Faiths badge, and Frith Grange to light fires for Bonfire Night.
A couple of stand-out meetings included our Cubs (ages 8–10.5) gardening project, which included growing their own vegetables, planting hedges and building a bug hotel. In October we celebrated the Group’s 95th anniversary with a special video, cake and awards presentation.
Outside of our weekly meetings, it’s the camps which continue to be a highlight. In 2024 our Scout section has offered four camps, including a week-away in summer to East Sussex and our annual Narrowboat Camp where the Scouts take the lead steering, operating locks and cooking.
Over our 95 years, 2nd Edgware has continuously offered Scouting, including through the Second World War and online through the Covid pandemic, all of which has been run by volunteers. At the end of 2024 we’ve said thankyou and goodbye to a handful of our adult leaders, after many years helping the Group. Looking forward to next year, we’re now in search of new teams of adults to run our Cubs (ages 8-10.5) and Beavers (ages 6-8).
Volunteering at Scouts is flexible, allowing you to choose how much time you contribute. It’s also a lot of fun, getting to break up your week with something a bit different and supporting some brilliant young people. Working as part of a section team at Cubs or Beavers, you might be able to lead some of the games, teach a skill, or book onto an external activity. There’s training and support available, plus biscuits and hot drinks every step of the way.
